Signs of Alcoholism in Women

Alcohol abuse continues to impact millions of people’s lives each year. In 2022, 11.7 million women struggled with an alcohol use disorder1. Alcoholism in women has risen over the last few years as more women turn to alcohol to cope with depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues. Unfortunately, too many women believe drinking or using drugs helps reduce mental health symptoms, but really, it just makes things worse.

Evoke Wellness at Coconut Creek supports women who are misusing alcohol, prescription opioids, or other addictive substances. Our women’s rehab program creates a safe space free from any male presence so women can focus on their recovery. Doing this eliminates any possible distractions that can occur in a co-ed environment. Each of our programs includes group and private therapy sessions that use a mix of behavioral and holistic therapies and medical support.

Understanding Alcohol Use Disorder

Alcohol is a legal substance that creates a pleasurable experience that can be very addicting to women, especially if they regularly experience depression or anxiety symptoms. While it may seem to offer some relief, the more alcohol women consume, the harder it will be to stop.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a mental health condition that creates physical and psychological symptoms that keep women drinking despite any desire to quit. The neurological changes that happen with AUD cause women to develop a physical dependence on alcohol, along with strong mental cravings that can be hard to resist.

Basically, your brain and body will insist on a steady supply of alcohol and will do everything possible to compel you to keep drinking. That includes triggering thoughts or feelings that normally make you want to drink, along with physical symptoms, such as:

  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Insomnia
  • Stomach cramps
  • Drastic mood changes
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures

You will continue to feel these symptoms until you drink more or enroll in a detox program to begin the recovery process.

While there is no cure for AUD, there are several effective treatment programs that teach women healthy ways of abstaining from further alcohol use. Evoke Wellness at Coconut Creek helps women who are struggling with alcohol use disorder and want help breaking their addictions. Our women-only rehab program is ideal for women whose addiction to alcohol is a result of their relationships with men or who prefer a female-only recovery experience.

Recognizing the Signs of Alcoholism in Women

Recognizing the signs of addiction in women can be a little difficult. Many women will go to great lengths to hide their abuse from family and friends and are experts at hiding the physical signs of addiction. Still, there are ways that you can spot the tell-tale signs of an alcohol use disorder.

Some of the signs of alcoholism in women include:

  • Problems at work or school – Alcohol abuse takes a toll on the body and causes fatigue and mental decline. This can lead to missing deadlines or a decrease in the quality of their work. The more they drink, the more trouble they will have keeping up with their responsibilities.
  • Alcohol consumption increases over time – When you drink alcohol on a regular basis, you build up a tolerance to the substance. A tell-tale sign of abuse is needing to consume more to feel the same high. It also causes more intense cravings and withdrawal symptoms, which fuels the desire to consume more.
  • Disregarding family responsibilities – Women with AUD will begin to neglect childcare and have a harder time coping with unruly children. They are more likely to become angry and yell instead of calmly dealing with the situation. A common sign of alcoholism in women includes needing alcohol to “feel better” after caring for children all day.

Other signs to look for include discarded alcohol bottles in the trash or hidden around the home, irrational mood changes, and sneaking alcohol in water, soda, or coffee. If you suspect a loved one is misusing alcohol, the best way to help them is to enroll in a women-only rehab program.
